HeadSpace on the farm

On Tuesday 12th October HeadSpace visited Langage Farm and ice cream factory, just outside Plymouth. We started with a tour of the farm, meeting a large herd of cows about to go in for milking. From the safety of a platform, the group watched the herd move into the barn and get set up on the equipment. Our guide Sophie took us to see some calves in a nearby shed. They were a big hit with the group.

After the last of the cows went in for milking we were able to walk back towards the factory. Taking some photographs of tractors and farm equipment. We were then served a devon cream tea (cream first, then the jam) and learned about the workings of the business, including some top secret new products about to go on the market. Before we left we were allowed to go into the giant freezer too!

Some of the young people were interested in working at Langage Farm and will be given the opporunity to get some work experience, and interview for jobs over the Christmas period.

The trip was sponsored by the Europe Direct Information Service, based at Plymouth Central Library. The aim of their funding for 2010 is to reduce poverty and social exclusion.

Thanks to Langage Farm for a great trip and to Europe Direct for funding it.

Manga Jiman Competition 2010

The Manga Jiman Competition is back for 2010. Once again HeadSpace and the library service are promoting the competition to all you Mangakas. Anyone over the age of 14 can enter. You could win a trip to Japan or a laptop.

Exterminate! – our Make a Dalek night

Last Tuesday, one of the volunteers took control of the late session for ‘Make a Dalek’ night. Using a variety of different materials such as cardboard boxes, cans, tin foil, straws and paperclips etc, the young people of HeadSpace were set the challenge of trying to make their own daleks by utilising their creative, imaginative and practical skills. It was a very hands-on job! After a lot of effort and concentration, a variety of daleks were created and each had their own merit; mirroring the hard work that went into them.

HeadSpace hit the airwaves on radio day!

Last Sunday HeadSpace took part in Efford’s one day community radio day. The young people promoted the station by giving away free mini radios and leafleting. HeadSpace also hosted a slot from 2-3pm and later the station aired their radio play ‘The Wild Spirits of Efford’. Rhys, George and Liam broadcast from 2-2.30pm and Sonny, Matt and Sam took to the air from 2.30-3pm.

The day included a community celebration event at Efford valley including a bouncy castle, games, prize draw for the NSPCC and a BBQ. Over 300 people attended the event and 30 broadcast live to Efford (and online).

This Sunday HeadSpace will be taking part in a one day community radio event. Young people will broadcast live from Efford Youth Centre, some will DJ and others will be roving reporters, out and about in the area. The HeadSpace group will be hosting shows from 2-3pm and 6-7pm. They will be taking song requests, telling jokes and broadcasting their radio play for the first time.

Efford FM is a great chance for young people to find out more about Efford. The day will explore Efford fort, personal histories, Efford Valley and High View School. You can listen on a (non-digital) radio on 107.9FM from 9am-9pm this Sunday 25th July.

Meet Mangako!

Konnichiwa!

Mangako is the ideal club for Otakus and people who are really interested in Japanese culture.

Situated in Efford Library, Mangako is on Tuesday’s from 5.30-8.30pm for 11-19 year olds. We do loads of Japanese related activities such as cosplaying, Manga drawing and occasionally eating Japanese food.

During the club, you can borrow some of the Mangas available in the library and have a hot drink. It is a club full of enthusiastic teens, who will make you feel welcome, we enjoy every moment of it!

There are activities that will keep you entertained in a safe environment.
