January 2010 will soon be upon us, along with more exciting HeadSpace events. We wanted to share our highlights of the year at HeadSpace Efford.
Our new 15-19s group grew, got a new time 6.30-8pm and started to work on some brand new projects.
We launched our library mural in May after working for several months with the local artist Jeff Stratton to create a design that would suit everyone who uses our outdoor space.
The 15-19s hosted their own James Bond night at the library which included a glamorous photoshoot for the local newspaper’s fashion supplement, bond quiz, casino games and mocktail bar.
Author Chris Higgins visited the 11-14s in June to talk about her book Love ya babe and brought plenty of chocolates with her!
In July our new Manga group Mangako! launched at HeadSpace, the group led by Abi set up their own website, wrote and performed a Manga play and have come up with the design for a young people’s library card which will be available in all our libraries next year.
The 11-14s took part in breakdancing and lyric writing workshops at the library to celebrate International Youth Day in August. Young people and staff learned some new moves and produced some fantastic creative writing.
Alex from Turntable technique helped both groups to put together their own HeadSpace beatbox tracks. The young people wrote their own lyrics and created some unique sounds using turntables and equipment. The tracks will be uploaded to our blog in January 2010.
HeadSpace volunteers supported Camp Vamp our Twilight themed event at Central Library in November. The team helped to set up the library, organised the prize draw, welcomed our guests and marked our quiz entries.
Mangako! produced some brilliant artwork and Manga character profiles which can be viewed on our Plymouth Libraries Flickr site: http:www.flickr.com/plymouthlibraries
Both groups took part in our Never Mind the buzzcocks music quiz which was a real success and tested our knowledge of music past and present to the limit. We will be hosting another version of the panel show in the new year.
More recently HeadSpace made their own Christmas decorations for Efford Take a Part community art project launch. The decorations were used to decorate the local sheltered housing lounge and some were sold by our young people to raise money for the Take a Part project locally.
The 15-19s learned to ballroom dance and we hosted their very own version of Strictly to celebrate Christmas. This involved one week rehearsing the Waltz and another performing. The young people had their own scoring panels and gave comments on the HeadSpace worker’s dancing skills.
Coming up next year, we will be going out and about as a group to choose some brand new Manga books and some new books for our older teens. We’ll also celebrate valentine’s day by writing poems and making gifts. Plus we’ll have short talks and activities on young people’s issues.
Thank you for reading our blog in 2009, we all wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
